When
inquiring or applying for scholarships, always make the best first and lasting
impression.
-
If inquiring/applying via email, use a sensible email address. Cutesy,
improper email addresses are not attractive. Additionally such addresses may
be stopped by filters, which relegate your correspondence to the junk mail
folder.
-
If inquiring/ applying by email, postal mail or fax, do not take shortcuts
with grammar, relying on email jargon or slang.
-
If inquiring/applying in person or by telephone, present the best “you”
possible. Speak clearly and directly.
-
In all cases use manners. “Yes”, “No”, “Yes, sir”, “No, Ma’am”, “Thank you”
and “Please” are always in style and should be employed whenever possible.
In short,
you never know who reads emails and you may not know who you are speaking to in
person or by phone. Sometime these people are involved in selecting candidates
or are committee members for interviews. Sometimes they are the scholarship
donor and sometimes they award the funds.
